Never Enough- Music Analysis #1

I pick the song Never Enough from the musical The Greatest Showman. I chose this song because it is one song that I absolutely love to play. From the lyrics to the dynamics and accents, it is a beautiful piece showing the character's emotions. The song was written by Pasek and Paul and performed by Loran Allred. The song is known to be hard to sing due to the wide vocal range. But still brings gladness to its listeners.

Dynamics

Who doesn't love energy in their music? When you can feel the passion of the lyrics when you hear the instruments play certain dynamics? Well, that is what the song Never Enough does for me. When I listen to the song I can't help but be overcome with joy.
The song's opening measures start sounding like a lullaby, and then it builds a sentimental atmosphere when the first verse starts. We begin to see more energy build up as the chorus goes on, and the character creates more passion in her voice. Then we come across the bridge the tempo doesn't slow down but the character holds her words out more but holds onto the passion from the chorus. The song jumps right back to the chorus with the same dynamic and passion. Then we see the outro build up which leads to a dramatic stop. The actor says her last lyrics, and then the music plays the last measure with a lullaby feeling just like the into.

Lyrics

Lyrics can be argued to be one of the most important parts of songs. Lyrics tell us what the artist wants us to feel in the song.
The lyrics talk about the character's passion for a past lover. The character tells us how she could have everything life can offer and she would always choose her lover over it all. She tells us that when she says the following lyrics.

"I'm trying to hold my breath
Let it stay with me
Can't let this moment end
You set off a dream in me
Getting louder now
Can you hear it echoing?
Take my hand
Will you share this with me?
Cause darling without you

All the spots in a thousand spotlights
All the stars we steal from the night sky
Will never be enough
Never be enough
Towers of gold are still too little
These hands could hold the world but little
Never be enough
Never be enough
For me"

When I hear these lyrics I feel the passion she holds I hear the adoration in every word and in her voice. It matches the dynamic of the instruments that are playing in the background.

Melody and Scales

The song is made around a few major scales. It contains A, E, and D flat major scales. But a wide vocal range stretching from Eb3, the E-flat note to Ab5, the A-flat above High C. This makes it really hard to sing but it brings vibrant emotion into the song. The melody holds a hooky, pop repetitive type style to it. The melody contains a melodic complexity and chord melody tension. It also dips in a little bit of chord bass melody, chord complexity, and chord progression novelty.

  1. Hey Cynthia, I have never heard this song before, but I really like it. Her vocal range in this song is truly astounding. Especially as the song enters the second half, you can feel so much emotion in her voice. I think that the tempo went at a pretty good pace, as the singer had to really build up the emotion in the song. After listening, I am motivated to watch the Greatest Showman.

  2. Hi Cynthia! I am a huge fan of the greatest showman and I love that you chose this song. It is so moving in so many ways. I love how big she can make her voice and how much raw emotion that she has. I think the dynamics are the real star in this song. We did this song when I was in highschool and we only had one girl who could hit the highest note so that was her only job. Even if you took out all the lyrics to this song you could still feel the emotion in it.

  3. Hey Cynthia, I heard this song when it first came out and I saw it with my wife but never actually remembered it. I honestly forgot how much of a vocal range she really has in this performance. It really is truly amazing, I wonder why looking back on it that I do not remember this part as much as I remember the rest of the film. However, I do appreciate being told when I am wrong. The simple fact I do not remember this part in the film is making me watch the film tonight.
